The distinctive pottery made for use and show at the village of Mata Ortiz, Mexico, has evolved since Juan Quezada founded it in 1974. Around 350 potters now produce this prized art form. Six distinct styles are presented: black, polychrome, sgraffito (etched), colored, miniature, and special shapes. This fresh, comprehensive look includes a discussion of similarities in the bird motif with Acoma Pueblo pottery. Private and gallery collections made over the years were studied and photographed especially for this book. Each piece presented is carefully described, including the maker's name, dimensions, and value. Estimated retail values are suggested as a general guide. Emerging artists are well represented, making this book an important reference for the classic forms, current styles, and those made in the future.
